Der Aufbau besteht aus einem Dämmstoff (an die Wand geklebt und/oder gedübelt), einer Putzträgerschicht (armierter Unterputz) und einer Oberflächenschicht mit Anstrich (Oberputz und Farbe). Der Hauptbestandteil – der Dämmstoff – bestimmt die grundlegenden technischen und energetischen Eigenschaften des WDVS. Die Montage der einzelnen Komponenten eines WDVS erfolgt erst auf der Baustelle.
